Á samráðstíma leggðist enginn hagsmunaaðili gegn úrsögninni og engar vísbendingar voru um að íslensk fyrirtæki hefðu notfært sér ákvæði samningsins um vernd fjárfestinga.

Iceland's government formally decided on 12 May 2026 to withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), with withdrawal taking effect on 17 March 2027. The decision was led by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, who characterised the treaty as outdated and at odds with Iceland's climate and energy priorities. According to the ministry, no stakeholders argued in favour of continued membership during the consultation, and there was no evidence of Icelandic companies utilising the treaty's investor protection or dispute settlement mechanisms.
