Donald Trump forseti lýsti ítrekað yfir áhuga á að eignast Grænland í síðara forsetatímabili sínu (frá janúar 2025), og neitaði að útiloka hernaðaraðgerðir. Heimskautasvæðið hefur vaxandi hernaðarlega þýðingu vegna bráðnunar ísa, sjaldgæfra jarðefna og vaxandi áhuga Kína og Rússlands, sem eykur hernaðarlegt mikilvægi Íslands.
Enska frumtextinn
US President Donald Trump repeatedly stated during his second term (from January 2025 onwards) that the United States should acquire Greenland, characterising it as essential for US national security and strategic interests. Trump first raised the idea of purchasing Greenland in August 2019 during his first term, which was dismissed by Danish PM Mette Frederiksen as 'absurd'. In his second term, he escalated the rhetoric significantly: in January 2025 he refused to rule out military force to acquire Greenland, appointed Ken Howery as ambassador to Denmark (a figure seen as sympathetic to the acquisition idea), and referred to Greenland as vital for 'national security purposes'. The strategic context includes: (1) the Arctic's growing geopolitical importance as ice retreats open new shipping routes; (2) Greenland's rare earth mineral deposits; (3) US concerns about Chinese research and investment activities in the Arctic and Greenland specifically; (4) Russia's military build-up along the Northern Sea Route. Iceland's geographic position between Greenland and Europe makes it strategically relevant to US Arctic policy.

Trump's statements about Greenland have been interpreted differently — some analysts see them as genuine territorial ambitions, others as negotiating leverage for basing rights or mineral access. The characterisation of Chinese 'activity near Greenland' as a primary motivation for Trump's position is contested; Trump himself has cited multiple reasons. Denmark and Greenland's autonomous government have consistently rejected any transfer of sovereignty.
