Denmark has achieved substantial greenhouse gas emission reductions since 1990. According to the Danish Energy Agency and the European Environment Agency, Denmark's total greenhouse gas emissions declined from approximately 70 million tonnes CO2-equivalent in 1990 to approximately 33–35 million tonnes in 2023, a reduction of roughly 50%. The steepest declines came from the energy sector (transition from coal to wind power: Denmark now generates over 50% of electricity from wind) and the waste sector. However, agricultural emissions have been more resistant to reduction, declining only approximately 10–15% over the same period. Denmark's Climate Act (Klimaloven, 2020) established a legally binding target of 70% emission reduction by 2030 relative to 1990 and climate neutrality by 2050 — among the most ambitious in the EU. Denmark has been frequently cited in Icelandic EU debates as an example of how EU membership and climate policy interact.

Emission reduction figures vary depending on the accounting methodology (e.g., with or without LULUCF — Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry). The approximately 50% figure includes LULUCF. Without LULUCF, the reduction is closer to 45%. Also, some of Denmark's apparent emission reductions reflect offshoring of industrial production rather than genuine decarbonisation. Agricultural emission reductions have been relatively modest compared to energy sector reductions.
