Enska frumtextinn

UK goods exports to the EU have fallen significantly since Brexit. In 2024, UK goods exports to the EU were £177 billion, approximately 18% below their 2019 level in real terms, having previously exceeded £215 billion in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Services exports to the EU performed better, rising 19% above 2019 levels in real terms. The UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) provides zero-tariff, zero-quota access but introduced substantial non-tariff barriers including customs declarations, rules of origin requirements, sanitary and phytosanitary checks, and regulatory divergence. The UK's share of EU imports has declined relative to pre-Brexit trends. Total UK exports of goods and services to the EU were £358 billion in 2024, representing 41% of all UK exports.

Fyrirvarar

Goods trade decline partly overlaps with Covid-19 disruption in 2020-2021, making it difficult to isolate the Brexit effect precisely. Services trade has been less affected due to fewer new barriers, though financial services passporting was lost. The counterfactual (what trade would have been without Brexit) is inherently uncertain.
