Following Brexit, Norway's fisheries negotiations with the EU became significantly more complicated. As reported in Brussel-vaktin (January 2025), Norway prioritises bilateral arrangements with the UK over EU negotiations, has made unilateral agreements with the UK and Faroe Islands on mackerel, and denies EU historical cod fishing rights near Svalbard while granting Russian vessels access to Norwegian ports. The EU Parliament's fisheries committee (hearing 29 January 2025) proposed revising EU Regulation 1026/2012 on unsustainable fishing to authorise EU enforcement action against non-cooperating states — a tool that could theoretically be used against EEA partners. This dispute illustrates how the EEA framework does not prevent fisheries conflicts between EEA/EFTA states and the EU.

The characterisation of Norway's fisheries positions is from the EU/Iceland perspective via Brussel-vaktin. Norway's perspective may differ. The proposed revision of Regulation 1026/2012 is an EP committee suggestion, not adopted policy. Iceland's fisheries situation differs from Norway's (different species, different zones), so this precedent has limited direct applicability but illustrates EU enforcement dynamics.
