Enska frumtextinn
Iceland has the highest share of renewable energy in its primary energy supply of any European country, at approximately 85% (2024), compared to the EU-27 average of approximately 23%. Virtually all electricity generation (99.98%) comes from hydropower (~70%) and geothermal (~30%). Geothermal energy also provides direct heating to approximately 90% of Icelandic homes. This energy profile is unique in Europe and means that EU energy market integration — including the EU Emissions Trading System and Renewable Energy Directive targets — has limited direct relevance to Iceland's domestic energy system. However, potential electricity exports via a subsea cable to the UK or continental Europe would be affected by EU internal energy market rules.

The 85% renewable share in primary energy is high but the remaining 15% is almost entirely imported fossil fuels for transport and fishing vessels. Iceland's transport sector remains heavily fossil-dependent. EU membership would bring obligations under transport decarbonisation directives.
