GDP share understates the sector's economic footprint when food processing is included. The sector also has outsized cultural and political significance, particularly in rural Iceland where farming sustains communities. Greenhouse horticulture (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers) has grown substantially due to cheap geothermal energy.
